Rinnaya has never known the land of Illyson to give her anything but loss. Her Ironskin Lineage, once powerful and prosperous, is now reviled. And while dealing with the unbearable loss of her parents, her older brother left her to raise her younger brother, Liam, alone. All she wants is to give Liam a happier, safer childhood than she had.
But when she discovers her essence contains the same latent power that led to the Ironskins’ demise, she is forced to leave Liam behind to receive training. If she doesn’t, he’ll be taken from her to protect him from her uncontrolled abilities. But leaving home for the first time stirs the darkness in her lingering trauma.
When her older brother reveals a plot for an Ironskin rebellion, and that he’s placed her at the centre of it, it becomes harder to separate her past from her present. As she decides between helping the rebellion or severing yet another family tie, Rin must face her loss if she wants to heal her heart, control her power, and stop a war.

Rinnaya Burgheim played right into the Revival’s hands when she survived the attack of undead clones and activated her death affinity. Now, her worst nightmare is her reality—they kidnapped Liam.
Forced into isolation for her own safety, Rin battles to control her death affinity. But seclusion and unsettling discoveries about her family twist her power into a volatile force that threatens to consume her. Hiding won’t help. To get close enough to foil the Revival’s plans, they need to think Rin believes in their cause.
Balancing a fine line of deception, Rin can only trust her friends, especially Johanna who understands Rin better than anyone through her unique Soul Tether. Together, they work to free Liam and unravel an ancient feud between the Emberstead and Ironskin Lineages. But what will Rin and Johanna sacrifice to unlock their true power and avoid repeating their ancestors’ atrocities?
what are people saying about Soul Tether
I'm always nervous to read the 2nd book in a series cause they're usually hit or miss. This book, definitely a hit! So much drama! I love how much detail B Joyce goes into focusing on depression and anxiety. It makes the book that much more relatable. The characters all experience their own versions of this and are so different because of it but somehow work really well as a team. The emotional connection between Rin and Johanna is so precious.
